Sustainability Integration
Is “green” the same thing as “sustainable?” If not, what is sustainability? Will this cost me money to accomplish? And, why does it seem that, all of sudden, everyone cares about this so much?
Well, for starters, many parts of sustainability aren’t really new at all. Lean manufacturing, for example, has been around for quite some time. And, no, some companies have actually found “hidden profits” when taking sustainability seriously and acting accordingly.
What is new is how members in your supply chain, both upstream and downstream, are paying close attention to how you balance the three P’s – people, profit, planet. Why should they care? Because study after study show the average consumer finally cares.
This isn’t just about government regulation – although that certainly plays a role for many industries. This isn’t just about big business suddenly finding a soul – but that, too, is playing a role in the urgency around being able to plan, execute and demonstrate your sustainability.
It’s the combination of all of these factors – consumer demand, government regulation, corporate responsibility – and more. And, they all affect you in one way or another. In this section you’ll find resources to help you plan, execute and demonstrate your “green value” to everyone in your world.

SPREADSHEET: What's the Cost of Losing a Client?
In July 2009, Walmart® made a game-changing move with the introduction of the concept of a “sustainability index” complete with 15 questions for each of their vendors to answer. Maybe you were not among the tens of thousands of vendors to receive the questionnaire. It doesn't really matter. The trickle down effect is going to be profound. Not convinced yet?/stron . . .

SPREADSHEET: C5 Scenario Planning Worksheet
Out of gas. In the fall of 2008 in Atlanta, all the gas pumps ran dry. Cars clogged streets, lining up to buy gas. Fist fights broke out at gas pumps. For places of business without MARTA access, people couldn't get to work. The trickle down effect was huge. Yes, it was resolved fairly quickly, but not before the mental damage was done. Something we'd taken for granted for so long was sudd . . .

SPREADSHEET: Business Building Worksheet
Hey, what does that say on your pay stub? If you want to create a very damaging business disruption, pay one person more than another for doing the same job… and let the lesser-paid person find out about it. It's critical that you pay people for delivering results, not just for showing up. A fast track for losing a future superstar is perceived unequa . . .

WORKSHEET: Weekly Progress Reports and Plan of Action
I'd rather have a root canal. Most regularly scheduled status meetings are about as useful as a coffee cup with the bottom missing. They're often boring beyond belief, and end up being nothing more than gripe sessions. Physically present, mentally absent people check email or messages on their phones. There is a better way. Maybe you've tried a few already. Here's an outline we've f . . .

WORKSHEET: Compare Us
The real price of price wars. In 1992 we witnessed a price brawl in the US airline industry. As fares tumbled downward, the number of people flying went up, and profits fell through the floor. Worse yet, unprofitable pricing was being multiplied by the number of people in those unprofitable seats! Some argue that we're seeing something similar in solar panels these days with China, by exam . . .

WORKSHEET: Change Is Constant
“The only constant is change.” Isaac Asimov wasn't referring to commercial flights, but it certainly applies. Every time an airplane goes up, the pilot makes regular corrections necessary to get back on the charted course. Cross winds, tail winds, storms… the plane actually spends most of it's time off course! Frequent adjustments are made, but no one panics. Course correction i . . .
